hiya!!
So, needless to say, i've left hong kong. We left there on monday morning, and took a 3.5 hour flight to beijing. Beijing is very different from hong kong. Here, there is VERY little english, and almost no Whities. I guess it is more like how i've always expected china would be-- and have been spoiled by the westernization of hong kong.
The weather here is beautiful. Low 20's during the day, sun shining, and a beautiful breeze. And cools down at night.
We met up with our tour group yesterday night, for dinner (duck was the main dish)-- i stuck (pardon the rhyme) to veggies. Delicious dinner actually. i digress-
tour group- leader is a whitie named paul from australia. There are two girls (about my age) from UK (wales, and london), A husband and wife (about my age) from new zeland, two nurses (late 30's early 40's) from england (they work in cardiothoracics!!), a woman (30 something) from Germany (or shall i say Cher-many), and cousins (both male, early 30's) from australia, and lastly, a young girl (maybe 20) from long island NY. There are 12 of us all together. Nice group of people so far!
Today, we went to the great wall. We went to a quiet part of the wall, that is a little farther away and much less touristy. Which was awesome, there was almost NO ONE there! The section of the wall we went to was built in the 1300's, and has never been restored. We took a cable car up a portion of the way, then walked (steep, strenuous and quite treaterous terrain--loose rocks etc) up hill, with LARGE steps in some parts. (and all of this was before we even got up to the actual wall). Then we made it to the wall!!! it was awesome! one of the greatest sights i have ever seen. I had been looking forward to this moment (maybe the most) during all of my trip preparations, and it was everything i could have hoped for! It really was breathtaking. We walked along the wall for quite a while, took loads of pictures, then took a FLYING FOX (or zipline) down the side of the wall, back to the ground level!!!!! IT WAS SOOOO FUN, i totally loved it! 8 of us did it from our group, so it was cool to have done it with those guys as well. We had no idea it was even an option, and when the guide told us about it, i KNEW i was doing it, even if i was going solo! Such a perfect day!!!
So, this brings us to right now, havent been back to the hostel all that long, and we're off to see CHINESE ACROBATS in about 20 minutes!! which should also be cool!
the hostel we're in is what i expected for a hostel..lol. Somewhere to sleep!! Tomorrow is a free day in beijing, and we're going to be going to the forbidden city, and the temple of heaven! I will keep you posted!
Sorry i cant post any of my pictures from the wall. I'm using the computer in the hostel, and we're not allowed to hook anything up to the USB ports. But trust me, the pictures wont do it justice anyway.
I'm sad you guys couldnt see what i saw today. EXTRAORDINARY.

What a wonderful start to your tours, Michelle! I truly am envious of all you're doing and how awed you were by the Great Wall. What a lucky young lady you are!
We can wait to see the pics when you get a chance to upload a few at another location (hint, hint).

P.S. Thanks for the note you left on your last morning here, that was very sweet of you :) I had a great time hanging out with you while were here. The only problem was the time went by way too quickly!!
Hey 'chelle!
It's great to hear that you are having a lot of fun traveling around Beijing and a nice crowd to travel with. I'm so happy for you that your once-in-a-lifetime journey has gone off to a good start! Have you been practising your Mandarin phrases with the locals? I can't wait to hear more of your stories.
Take care, 'chelle, and stay away from the tainted milk!
Hugs from HK,
Fanny
